Maneuvering through the home buying process can be overwhelming, especially to first time home buyers, when faced with the many options available in today’s world of mortgage lending. You don’t have to face it on your own. Huntington WV Housing Authority’s ‘Steps to Homeownership,’ is designed to walk you through the process one step at a time.
HHA’s homebuyer education is open to the public with no income limits, agency affiliation, or minimum credit score requirements for participation. The six week series will walk you through the home buying process from preparing for a home purchase to regular maintenance that will keep your investment in tip top shape for year to come. Whether you are actively engaged in the pursuit of homeownership, or would just like to have a better understanding of the home buying process, HHA’s Steps to Homeownership is a great place to enhance your understanding of topics such as:

  • Owner’s right and responsibilities
  • Budgeting
  • Buying on credit/credit repair
  • Types of mortgage loans
  • The loan application process
  • Role of the realtor/lender/attorney
  • Basic home maintenance/home inspection

HHA’s Steps to Homeownership exceeds the education requirements for participation in first time homebuyer and other specialty mortgage loan programs.

HHA’s Steps to Homeownership was designed to meet, and in many areas exceed the standards established by HUD and the National Industry Standards for Homeownership Education and Counseling. Completion of the program has been accepted for participation in various loan programs such as FHA, USDA Rural Housing, Section 8 HCV-homeownership option, Habitat for Humanity, as well as federally funded down payment assistance and first time homebuyer programs.

For the past 6 years, HHA has partnered with the Huntington Area Habitat for Humanity in providing homebuyer education to their program participants. As a result of this partnership, over 30 families have gone on to complete all of the requirements established by Habitat for Humanity and are now proud home owners.

The City of Huntington has been the administrator of a consortium down payment assistance program for many years which has made the dream of home ownership a reality for numerous local residents. Not only does HHA’s Steps to Homeownership meet the educational requirements for participation in the program, the agency staff has also been a champion for the program by promoting it throughout the community to local lenders, realtors, and organizations that serve individuals in targeted income levels.
