Notice-Effective June 28, 2007, we are no longer taking applications for the Housing Choice Voucher rental assistance program.

 

The Housing Choice Voucher Rental Assistance Program is a federally funded program designed to assist low-income families, the elderly and the disabled or handicapped in paying their monthly rental payments.

The Housing Choice Voucher Rental Assistance Program is funded exclusively by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, but administered hundreds of Public Housing Authorities (PHA's) nationwide, including the Huntington West Virginia Housing Authority in Cabell County.

The Housing Choice Program is an Equal Opportunity housing program. Families are eligible to receive assistance based on income regardless of age, creed, sex, religion, color, or national origin.

Assistance is based on your income and on your family size. Each participating family must pay 30 percent of its income for rent and utilities. The challenge is to find suitable housing at the price that is right for you. 

Assistance mentioned above, rental assistance is based on your income and your family size. According to the regulations, each family will pay 30% of its monthly adjusted income toward the gross rent, not to exceed 40% of their monthly-adjusted income at the initial leasing. 

Don't risk your chances for Federally assisted housing by providing false, incomplete, or inaccurate information on your application. There are strict penalties that apply if you knowingly omit information or give false information.

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) places a high priority on preventing fraud. If your application or recertification forms contain false or incomplete information, you may be: 
a.) Evicted from your apartment or house;
b.) Required to repay all overpaid rental assistance you received;
c.) Fined up to 10,000 dollars;
d.) Imprisoned for up to 5 years and/or;
e.) Prohibited from receiving future assistance.
NOTE: Other State of West Virginia and local law(s) may impose additional penalties.

When you fill out your application you should know what is expected of you. If you do not understand something, say so. 

When you give your answers to specific application questions, you will be asked to include the following information:

INCOME: (a) All sources of money you and any member of your family receive (wages, welfare payments, alimony, social security, pension, etc), (b) Any money you receive on behalf of your children (child support, social security for children, etc.), (c) Income from assets (Interest from a savings account, credit union, or certificate of deposit, dividends from stocks, etc), (d) Earnings from a second job or part time job; and (e) Any anticipated income (such as bonus or pay raise you expect to receive)

ASSETS: (a) All bank accounts, savings bonds, certificates of deposit, stocks, real estate etc. that are owned by you and any adult member of your family household who will be living with you, (b) Any business or asset you sold in the last 2 years for less than its full value, such as your home to your children.

FAMILY AND HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS: (a) The names of all of the people (adults and children) who will actually be living with you, whether or not they are related to you. Information you give on you application will be verified by your housing agency. In addition, HUD may conduct computer matches of income that you report with various Federal, State or private agencies to verify that it is correct.

ANNUAL RECERTIFICATIONS: You must provide updated information at least once a year. The Huntington WV Housing Authority requires that you report any changes in income or family/household composition immediately: (a) Income changes, such as pay increases or benefits, change of jobs, loss of job, loss of benefits, etc., for all adult family/household members. (b) Any family/household member who has moved in or out. (c) All assets that you or your family/household members own and any asset that was sold in the last 2 years for less than its full value. 

Beware of the following fraud schemes:
-Do not pay any money to file an application
-You cannot pay money to move up the waiting list
-You may not pay for anything not covered by your lease.
-Get a receipt for any money you pay.
-Get a written explanation if you are required to pay any money other than rent (i.e., maintenance charges).

REPORT ABUSE: If you are aware of anyone who has falsified an application, or if anyone tries to persuade you to make false statements; report them to The Huntington WV Housing Authority. You may also call the Local HUD office (Charleston, WV at (304) 347-7000) or the HUD Hotline at (202) 472-4200. This is not a toll-free number. You may also choose to write US Housing and Urban Development, Room 8254, Seventh Street SW, Washington, DC 20410.

Whenever appropriate we will ask you for information about your income and your family size so we can make sure that you are paying the right rent to your landlord and that your house or apartment is the right size for your family. 
-Let us know about all income received by members of your household and income that you expect to receive in the next year. Many people forget income from second jobs, overtime, part-time jobs and income received for child support.
-Let us know the name of everyone expected to live in your household in the next year. If your family size increases, we will help you find a larger place to live. Your rent payment to your landlord must not be more than the amount in your lease that we calculated at the time of our review.

We urge you to be sure that you are meeting these responsibilities so that you will continue to receive assistance and so that this program can serve as many families as possible.
